Call of the Mountain is a casual sim pixel game about exploration and community building
COTM is inspired by games like Cattails, Stardew Valley, Dave the Diver, and Clangen. COTM does not have a direct 'end', gameplay lasts forever if the player desires.
Intro

Game fades in. Wilde greets the player."Another new face! You're not the first to be relocated here. Human development is really destroying the land below the mountains. My name is Wilde! I'm happy to show you around, like I've done for others. What's your name?"- prompts character creation -
Character Creation
Players are able to create their own character! They can choose between mare and stallion, then pick a base coat, quip type, quip colour(s), and white marking type & coverage. Eye colour default is white, but players can pick any colour from a slider. Players can assign themselves a name and preferred pronouns. The above are samples of what could be hundreds of combinations. This same system is used to auto generate random NPC designs, and make foal designs based on parent 'genes'.The player can have foals with any romanceable NPC. Foals are born after 6 in-game months. Same-sex couples will adopt an orphaned foal.
Foals are generated from their parents’ colours and markings. Base coats follow simplified genetics, quip type will be inherited from either parent. For quip colour, the game generates a gradient based in the parents and assigns the foal a random value. Eye colour is 40% dam, 40% sire, 20% chance of random colour.

Abilities
Sprint: Default pace is a jog. Sprinting consumes stamina and lags a limited time. Sprint bar shows above the player when sprinting. Sprinting is used to flee from confrontation.Kick: Can be used to break environmental objects, or to attempt to intimidate foes. Kicking is not meant to be combat, merely a chance to stun or distract so flee can be taken.Dig: Digging can be very useful! Many things are hidden under the dirt. In winter, digging is essential to find forage. Digging enables the player to plant mini gardens of important herbs and flowers.Rear: Used to reach high objects or attempt to intimidate smaller foes.Carry: Light objects can be held in the player's mouth. Wilde will give the player a wicker basket to begin with. This is your inventory.
Stats
Health
Begins to drain when stamina is depleted. Player can still sprint, flee, etc when out of stamina, but it will now consume health. Failing to intimidate a foe can also reduce health. The player will wake up in Saira’s grove if health empties. Player will be required to rest for a few in-game days to build their strength back and return to the wild. Player can choose to skip the rest days by sleeping early, or the player can engage with Saira and play mini games with her and they help her with her tasks.Stamina
Sprinting, fleeing, digging, and rearing deplete stamina. Stamina can be regenerated by specific forage, or by resting in the hot springs. Stamina can be increased with the help of NPC Saira.
Passive Stats
Passive stats are raised though player’s chosen actions in quests, dialogue, or random events. Passive stats increase every in-game year no matter what.Persuasion: easier to get things from NPCs
Charisma: friendship raises faster, new dialogue
Survival: weather has less of an effect on the player, forage has a chance to yield more
World

Map System
The main map page offers an overview of the area. Clicking a location title will bring you to a mini map of the area, and will function as a fast travel mechanic when all tiles in an area are explored.
? = encounter
! = quest
chest = cache spot*Mini maps offer a pin for the player’s current location (this can be toggled on/off), markers for events, quests, cache spots, and toggle mode to view herd locations. Event and quest markers are dynamic and change as NPCs and Random Events cycle every three days. Cache markers will only show when a cache location is discovered.* A Cache Spot functions as the player's extended storage. WMEs don't have much in the way of pockets. Caches are run by raccoons through a network of trees. Cache raccoons can store and retrieve your items at any time - well, as long you can bribe them with something.

top left: season icon, a slider that changes with time of daybottom left: inventory, if a basket or other storage is ownedbottom right: map icon, stamina and health bars.sample represents 2 tiles of map

Seasons

Seasons change throughout an in-game year. Each lasts 3 months (26 days in-game). Seasons change using visual cues, but NPCs will also give hints as to when in the cycle the player is. Each season has a different foraging table. Weather (snow, rain, wind storm etc) can have different effects on the player (slow movement, increased stamina drain, health drain, etc)
Spring | Summer | Winter | Fall |
---|---|---|---|
Month 1- buds grow | Month 1- spring flowers die | Month 1- fall plants begin to mature | Month 1- trees bare. some snow |
Month 2 - flowers and leaves bloom | Month 2 - leaves in full bloom | Month 2 - all leaves in full rust | Month 2 - snow storms more common |
Month 3 - spring flowers begin to die off | Month 3 - leaves show signs of change | Month 3 - trees are almost barren | Month 3 - snow lessens, plants poke out in bare patches |
NPCs
NPCs are scattered throughout the world! They have varying functions and mechanics, and the player can gain or lose relationship with any NPC.Certain NPCs can have foals with each other. Foals of NPCs can be recruited by the player's character.♡ = Romanceable NPCPlayers can choose to join the romanced NPCs herd, or start a new herd in any available tile. Once affection is maxxed out, NPCs can have foals with the player. One foal is born every two years in game, if the player chooses to accept. Same-sex couples will adopt an orphaned foal. Foals are generated via the game's colour and quipping system (refer back to character creation). The player cannot play as a domesticated equid. Romancing a domesticated equid will involve a lot of back-and-forth.Some NPCs can become Companions and join the player in the world. Companions can help in random events, hold objects, and unlock new dialogue options with other NPCs.
